Current threats
- Phishing Attacks: Cybercriminals send deceptive emails pretending to be from legitimate sources to trick employees into revealing sensitive information or downloading malware. For example, an employee might receive an email that appears to be from their bank, requesting login credentials to update account information.
- Ransomware: Malicious software encrypts a company's files or systems, and attackers demand payment for their release. An example could be a small business experiencing a ransomware attack where all their customer data is encrypted, and the attackers demand payment in cryptocurrency for its release.
- Malware Infections: Malware, such as viruses, worms, or trojans, infects computers and networks, causing damage or stealing sensitive information. An example could be a small business downloading a seemingly harmless software program from the internet that contains malware, leading to the compromise of their financial records.
- Social Engineering: Attackers manipulate employees into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security. For instance, a cybercriminal might call an employee pretending to be from a software provider/IT support and convince them to share their login credentials.
- Weak Passwords: Using easily guessable or common passwords makes it easier for attackers to gain unauthorized access to systems or accounts. An example could be an employee using "password123" to secure their email account, which could be easily guessed by an attacker. This is particularly an issue for shared mailboxes
- Unpatched Software: Failure to install security patches and updates leaves systems vulnerable to known exploits and vulnerabilities. For example, a small business neglecting to update their operating system could be susceptible to a cyber attack exploiting a known vulnerability.
